Joel Riff has structured, drafted, negotiated, and counseled clients on IP licenses and other technology transactions in Silicon Valley since 1987. He provides services to a wide range of clients, from newly formed startups to multinational corporations, in many industries. His practice includes advising clients on legal issues relating to Internet commerce, open source software, spam regulation, and online privacy, and performing IP due diligence for mergers and acquisitions. He has helped many clients with their licensing forms and contract negotiation playbooks and has conducted licensing workshops for clients and law firms.

Joel is a regular speaker and author on technology transactions topics, both cutting edge issues and licensing fundamentals. Prior to joining the Royse Law Firm to head its Technology Transactions Group, he co-chaired the Intellectual Property Group at Hoge, Fenton, Jones & Appel in San Jose, was a partner at GCA Law Partners LLP (formerly General Counsel Associates LLP) in Mountain View, and headed the Licensing and Online Commerce Group at Fenwick & West. Joel began his legal career with Mayer, Brown & Platt in Chicago. Prior to getting his J.D., Joel was a software programmer for five years with Allstate Insurance and the University of Illinois. 

Joel was born and raised in the City of Chicago. He is married and has two adult sons.
